Why Do We Feel Uncomfortable When Doing Nothing?
Why can’t we just sit and be with ourselves?
You know what I’ve been thinking about lately?
Many people today feel bored when they finally get some free time. After working hard all week, when they finally get a day or two to relax, they don’t know what to do with it. They say, “I’m bored.”
I see it in my friends, too. The moment they’re free, they call me and say, “Let’s meet up,” or “Let’s go somewhere.” And while I understand that it’s fun to travel, meet people, or do something exciting, I often wonder why we can’t just sit and be with ourselves?
Not all the time can be filled with plans, trips, shows, or outings. And after doing all those things, if you still feel bored, maybe the problem isn’t about what you’re doing, maybe it’s about how comfortable you are just being still.
I tell my friends, try just sitting. Don’t scroll your phone. Don’t rush to watch something. Just sit. Listen to the birds. Watch the wind. Feel your breath.
But for many, that kind of stillness feels strange. Almost scary. Because they’ve never really spent time with themselves. Without distractions, they feel lost. As if doing nothing means they’re wasting time.
But what if doing nothing — sitting in silence, thinking, dreaming, watching — is the most powerful thing we can do?
I work from home. I spend a lot of time by myself. And now, for a couple of years, I’ve come to love that space. I walk, I sit, I read, I think. I enjoy the quiet. It’s not empty. It’s full of peace.
I’ve learned that stillness isn’t boring. It’s a skill. A beautiful one. Like learning to listen again. Like reconnecting with your own mind.
So if you ever feel bored, try this: don’t run away from it. Sit with it. Let it be. Let the boredom turn into curiosity. Let your thoughts rise.
And maybe, in that quiet moment, you’ll realize you’re not bored at all.
You’re just… finally free.
