Not Too Early, Not Too Late: Why Tech Was Perfectly Timed for 90s Kids
Why Growing Up in the 90s Felt Like a Beautiful Story.
Have you seen people say “90s kid” a lot on social media? Ever wonder why it’s so popular and special?
Well, I’m a 90s kid too. And after thinking about it, I believe we are really lucky. We were born at a time when new technology came into our lives at just the right time.
We saw landline phones, then smartphones. We had slow internet at first, and then got unlimited internet. And now we even use smart tools like AI! But the best part is—we got to enjoy each stage of life without technology taking over too early.
Our childhood, college, and jobs all had their own magic. And tech came into each phase just when we were ready for it.
Let’s see why growing up in the 90s was truly special and how we got the best of both worlds.
Our Childhood
Our childhood days in the late 90s and early 200s. We remember communicating on landline phones. We remember Pappa getting his first Nokia keypad phone. We used to play Snake and cricket games on it. And that little was more than enough to fill our hearts with joy.
Meanwhile, we were busy making new friends. Just to play real games such as chess, carrom, and many more indoor games. Who else remembers cricket and WWF cards? I am not sure if we still get those. We had that one friend who had all these, and our goal was to be a good friend to him so that we could get access to all the games.
We were uninvited guests at our friends' homes every weekend. We had no option at that time rather than being with friends. That was only our world, friends, games and laughter. How beautiful and innocent our lives were. We lived in the moment.
Even when we wanted to play video games, we needed friends. We played on TV video games or computer games, and it was more fun only when everyone played together. Not like today, where kids play alone on phones for hours and get addicted. We had real fun with real people.
I'm happy that technology didn’t take over our childhood. We had so much fun playing outside and doing silly things.
As we stepped out of our playful childhood and into college life, the world around us was changing fast. Smartphones, social media, and the internet had finally arrived. But luckily, they came at the perfect time—just when we were ready to explore, learn, and grow.
Our College Life
Phones, computers, and social media came later, when we were already grown up. We got the best of both worlds—real childhood fun and cool technology later!
As we entered college, smartphones started becoming more common. And once again, it came at just the right time. We were big enough to use technology wisely, and young enough to enjoy all the new apps and trends.
We still remember the excitement of using Bluetooth to share songs and videos. Or waiting for our turn at the college computer lab to check Orkut or Facebook. Taking selfies was a new thing, and WhatsApp became our main way of staying connected with hostel friends and family.
Facebook and Instagram were like digital diaries, where we proudly uploaded our coolest photos and tagged all our friends. That was a time when social media truly served its purpose—helping us stay connected and share memories, without the overwhelming noise we see today.
Smartphones also brought us closer through multiplayer games like Mini Militia and Asphalt, where we sat in the same room and played together—shouting, laughing, and bonding over every win or loss. It wasn’t just about the screen; it was about being together.
Technology also made our college life more convenient and fun. We used WhatsApp to share notes and help each other study. We used internet to find more learning resources. We used youtube to learn the complex topics.
We also used apps to book movie tickets without standing in long lines. And with online maps, we could go anywhere without getting lost!
We enjoyed a simple and happy childhood, full of real games and real friends. And when technology came, we knew how to use it wisely. We had fun without it, and we had fun with it too. Because we grew up on both sides, we learned what was right and wrong.
We didn’t let technology control us, we used it to make life better, while still enjoying the real world around us.
A Big Gift Called Jio – The Internet Revolution
When Jio came, I was in my final year of engineering. And I truly believe it came at the perfect time.
Before that, internet data was expensive and limited. We had to be careful about how much we used. Watching one video could use up all our data! But Jio changed everything. It gave us fast, free, and unlimited internet, and suddenly the whole world felt closer.
It wasn’t just a new network—it was a revolution.
But you know what? I’m actually glad we didn’t get unlimited internet when we were just starting college. If we had, we might have gotten addicted to our phones or spent too much time online.
That’s why I always say—for 90s kids, technology came at just the right time.
And Now… AI Is Helping Us at Work
Now we are all grown up and working in different jobs. And there’s something new that helps us every day—it’s called AI, which means Artificial Intelligence.
Just like Jio gave us fast and free internet at the perfect time, now AI is here to help us work better and faster. It can help us write, plan things, solve problems, and save time. People use AI to write emails, design pictures, answer questions, and even make apps!
For 90s kids like us, it feels like we’ve seen everything—from old landline phones to smart phones, from computer labs in school to using smart tools like ChatGPT today. Because we got technology slowly, we learned how to use it the right way. We still know how to think for ourselves and enjoy real life with friends and family.
AI also came at the right time—not too early and not too late.
Now we are in our late 20s or early 30s, working hard and growing in our jobs. AI didn’t come too soon to spoil our childhood or college fun. It came at the perfect moment, just when we needed help at work.
What better time could it be?
90s kids are truly lucky, we had a real, fun life, and now we have smart tools to help us too.
Conclusion
We played in the mud, made friends without screens, passed notes in class, shared laughs during chai breaks, and grew up with tech arriving one step at a time.
That’s why I say with pride, 90s kids are truly blessed.
We didn’t just grow up with technology...
We grew up around it, learned with it, and now we work smartly using it.
